The Y-STR test, is often used in difficult paternity cases where the alleged father is not available for testing. This test can indicate whether or not a child is related to the alleged father’s brothers and other male relatives who share a common paternal line.

Y- STRs are Short Tandem Repeats (STRs) found on the male-specific “Y” Chromosome. The coding genes, mostly found on the short arm of the Y Chromosome, are vital to male sex determination and other male related functions. Based on the genetic fact that the Y chromosome is passed from father to son(s) relatively unchanged through many generations, and has a relatively infrequent mutation rate, this DNA test examines highly differential markers on the Y chromosome, and DNA profiles for these markers are generated. These Y-STR profiles are then compared to determine if there is a match. Males related through their fathers will have the same or very similar Y-STR profiles, and those who are not have different profiles.

In a paternity situation where the alleged father is missing, Y-STR analysis cannot distinguish a specific relationship between males who belong to the same paternal line. However, it is useful for excluding males from an alleged biological relationship. For example, if a male child and his alleged uncle (alleged father’s full brother) are tested, their Y-STR profiles must match. If they do not, then the alleged uncle is excluded (not considered a biological uncle) and the alleged father is probably not the biological father.

Bio-Gene DNA Testing will only use 17 marker testing, instead of 10 genetic markers like many other companies, to provide you with a professional Y-STR DNA level test, allowing us to make certain we can provide you the most accurate results available today.

If it is not possible to test using buccal swabs, you may consider using an alternate sample such as:

Amniotic Fluid

Cups / Bottles

Feminine Hygiene

Razors

Bandaid (Used)

Dental Floss

Fingernails

Tissue

Chewing Gum

Earwax

Hair (With Root)

Tooth-brush

Cigarette Butt

Electric Razor

Hat (Well Worn)

Toothpick

Condom (Used)

Envelope / Stamp

Pacifier

Underwear

Although the Y-Chromosome is only found in males, women can also indirectly participate in a Y-STR DNA test if they are interested in determining their paternal relatives. They would need to ask a biological male relative, such as a father, brother, paternal uncle, or paternal grandfather to contribute a sample for comparison testing with her potential paternal relative.

How it works graphic

To order your Y-STR DNA test kit, please complete the order form at the right side of the page and we will begin the process of getting you the answers you need and deserve. Our prices can be found by selecting the test of your choice, the number of people testing, and your payment preferences when providing the information that is relevant to your particular case.

When ordering an Y-STR test you may choose to use a testing kit from Bio-Gene DNA Testing or build your own kit. This may be especially helpful is you are using alternate samples, or do not want to wait to the DNA kit to arrive to your shipping location due to time constraints.

If you chose to use a Bio-Gene DNA Testing kit, you will choose the shipping option that is right for you. Once your kit is mailed, you will be provided a tracking number to be able to determine when it will arrive. We do not ship DNA kits without a tracking number to protect your personal information.

Make you own kitIf you choose to use your own kit, you will choose the “make my own kit” option when choosing the shipping options, and upon receipt of your order (within 4 hours if received during regular business hours) you will be e-mailed a submission form, a unique ID number that relates to your case (we cannot process any DNA samples or perform testing without this case number), instructions on how to collect the samples, and our lab’s address to send your completed kit with samples for immediate processing.
