Step-By-Step Directions
The mouth (buccal) swabs are packaged in sterile packaging. You will have two packets. Each packet contains TWO swabs. You will use all 4 swabs for each person.
Step 1: Complete the information on the DNA collection envelopes.
The names listed should be the same as you put on your order form. There will be one collection envelope for each person whose DNA is being collected.
Step 2: Open the paper packaging and remove the swabs.
Please be careful to handle the swabs on the long handle (the non-cotton end) only. DO NOT, at any time, touch the cotton end with your hands or fingers.
Step 3: With clean dry hands, collect cheek cells by rolling the tip of the sample collection swab firmly on the inside of the right cheek and under the tongue for 20-30 seconds.
Be sure to roll the swab over the entire inner cheek surface. Repeat this process for the same individual with the second swab. You should use two swabs on the inside of the right cheek and two swabs on the inside of the left cheek. Repeat the process for every individual being tested using a different set of swabs and envelope for each person.
Step 4: The mouth swabs should be dry before putting them into the collection envelope.
The best way of doing this without risking contamination is to place them in an upright position in a clean dry glass. Do not put more than one person's DNA samples into a glass at a time. The DNA samples of each person must never touch each other. Once they are dry, place them back into the correct envelopes.
Step 5: Place all of the swab envelopes, plus and any included forms that you have completed, into the large pre-paid FedEx return envelope.
Then simply return them to a FedEx office or call FedEx to pick it up at a time that fits your schedule.
FAQs About Genetic Reconstruction DNA Testing
This type of test is used to confirm if a child is related to the possible father’s close relatives, when the possible father isn’t available for testing. There are, of course, other scenarios when type of test can help solve complex relationship questions.
If you have questions, please either call us at 1-855-362-5224, or complete our information request form and we will get back to you quickly with answers.
The minimum number of participants we recommend is three. There is no set number of people who need to participate, as each situation is unique, and this question is answered on a case-by-case basis. A general guideline is: the more close relatives who can test, the stronger the result.
No. The closer the potential biological relation to the person in question, the better. Biological cousins do not share enough DNA with the child to be helpful in confirming a family relationship.
Not on this test. In order to perform the complex testing involved, a buccal swab (mouth swab) needs to be sent for each person testing.
It is a simple process for DNA to be collected at different locations. We understand extended family members are often living in different locations. When you order your test, just indicate how many DNA collection kits need to be mailed to however many family members are participating in the test.
Probably not. Unlike paternity, sibling, avuncular and grandparent DNA tests, most courts do not to accept results for a family reconstruction test, as there is no chain of custody proof of the relatives testing and how they are related to each other, established through multiple DNA tests.
If you need results for court, establishing inheritance rights, or other legal reasons, we suggest a legal paternity test, legal sibling test, legal grandparent test, or a legal avuncular test, which are accepted in court.
Your DNA test results will be easy to read and understand. We will also provide you with our "Understanding Your DNA Results" booklet.
We are providing examples of a Family Genetic Reconstruction Test report below to give you an idea of what the results you receive will look like.
If the relationship can be genetically support, the probability of relationship will show in the range of 91% to 99.9+% probability of relationship. Do not confuse the probability of relationship with the accuracy of the test. The test results delivered to you will be 100% accurate in the reporting. As this is not a direct paternity test, it is based on the loci shared between the family members. Anything in the probability range about can be ruled a conclusive result for the relationship to exisit.
If the probability range is below 9%, then the results will show that the relationship is excluded, and cannot be supported by genetic evidence from those testing. Below is an example of a report showing an exclusion of a suspected relationship.
Of course, once you get your DNA report back, if you have questions, we are happy to provide you with help if needed.
